Designing for accessibility from day one
Retrofitting accessibility is expensive and never quite works. Building it in costs almost nothing.
Accessibility is not a checklist you run at the end. It's a set of defaults you pick at the start.
The defaults that matter
- Semantic HTML: a real
<button>, a real<nav>, one<h1>per page. - Visible focus rings, always. Never
outline: nonewithout a replacement. - Respect
prefers-reduced-motion- every animation, every parallax, every loader. - Colour contrast that clears WCAG AA before you fall in love with a palette.
Why it's cheaper this way
A keyboard-navigable component you built keyboard-navigable is free. The same component retrofitted a year later is a rewrite. We build the first kind.
