Custom build vs. a ready-made system
When a bespoke project is worth it, when it is a trap, and how to tell which one you are looking at.
Every business believes it is a special case. Most aren't - at least not in the parts that software touches.
Start with a ready-made system when
- Your process looks like everyone else's in your industry.
- You need to be live in weeks, not quarters.
- You don't want to own a codebase or a server.
Consider a custom build when
- A genuine competitive advantage lives in the workflow itself.
- You have the budget to maintain it for years, not just build it.
A good ready-made system is configurable enough that the line moves. Ours are built to bend before they break.
